art book cologne, founded by Bernd Detsch in 1997, is a wholesale company and specializes in buying and selling high quality publications in art, art theory, architecture, design, photography, illustrated cultural history and all related subjects internationally. Our team includes specialists in art, culture, music, book trade and media but in spite of our diversity we have one common ground: the enthusiasm for unique art books.
We purchase remaining stocks from museums, publishers and art institutions. We sell these remainders to bookstores, museum shops, and art dealers all over the world.

This volume offers a close look at the work of German neo-expressionist pioneer Karl Horst Hödicke. It presents sixty full-color reproductions of his paintings and sculptures, along with essays by art historians tracing his career and analyzing his work and its context.
Hödicke came to Berlin at age twenty to study at the Hochschule der Künste, and in 1964 he founded an influential artists’ exhibition space, Großgörschen 35. After a sojourn in America, he returned to Germany and began experimenting with plastic processes and, coming full circle, started teaching at the Hochschule der Künste. His influence can still be seen today—he’s considered the driving force behind the neo-expressionism of the 1980s, and artists are still wrestling with his works and ideas. This catalog accompanies a substantial, career-spanning show at the Berlinische Galerie, drawn largely from the gallery’s own substantial collection of Hödicke’s work.
