In 1970, Gerhard Richter met Brigid Berlin—also known as Brigid Polk—in Munich. She was Andy Warhol’s legendary muse and the enfant terrible of New York high society. This encounter gave rise to Richter’s significant series “Brigid Polk,” based on Polaroid self-portraits by the eccentric artist—a dialogue between America and Europe, photography and painting, artist and muse.
The series on Brigid Polk is one of the most important examples of Gerhard Richter’s photopainting. It exemplifies his struggle to define a new understanding of painting in dialogue with photography. This volume pays comprehensive tribute to this multifaceted body of work for the first time and traces its genesis within the circle of the influential Munich gallery owner Heiner Friedrich. Not least, the personal recollections of contemporary witnesses invite readers on a vivid journey back in time to the avant-garde art scene of the 1970s.
